You are responsible for the infrastructure relied upon by thousands of people to manage millions of their customers. With dozens of engineer colleagues constantly innovating and pushing changes, your systems and tooling define not only what is possible; but also how easy life is for everyone.
You are someone who can define the bigger picture of all things infra, be it designing, deploying, operating, monitoring, and everything in between. More importantly, you are hands-on with implementation that gets us there. You are the 'go to' person for engineers and beyond, you are savvy, and people trust your judgment.
Team
Planhat's Platform team is a small unit that stays ahead of the game. Anticipating and addressing bottlenecks before they hurt us, moving seamlessly from bigger picture to the nitty-gritty:
Figuring out what's manual and tedious, and providing tooling that engineers love
Delivering scalable, highly available, and secure cloud infrastructure, while keeping an eye on unnecessary costs
When production is running smoothly, deployments are easy, and security is tight, we are happy, but never complacent. We aim to go beyond expectations. We hire the best people where they want and need to be.
Competencies
We love the breadth and depth of DevOps:
Technically, and business-savvy: troubleshoot issues quickly, but also figure out and address underlying root causes. Be 'everywhere' you are needed, and have a positive impact. Check PRs with an eye for security, and give feedback that leads to better code quality.
No excuses mentality: thrive on responsibility. A global software product powering the key customer flows for thousands of businesses is what is at stake.
Strong collaborator: easy to work with and good judgment. Know when to ping every developer immediately; how much time to spend building a new POC, and how to define the success criteria. 'I don't know' is also a valid response sometimes!
Pragmatic: jobs are never half-done, or over-engineered. Do not obsess about what should work in theory, monitor performance in the real world and iterate.
It is not about years of experience, we look for talent, mindset, and track record more than anything. Our existing team have experience from:
'Overpeforming' in DevOps. The key player in designing and maintaining systems at fast paced company (i.e. 100 or 1000s of clients, world-class engineers, and growing rapidly)
Building and managing containerised environments (Docker/Kubernetes), and building out cloud infrastructure (we use GCS), and leveraging automation (Ansible or similar)
Strong computer science fundamentals (degree or self-taught), strong coding skills (Javascript + a backend language)
Trajectory
Planhat is growing fast, and so is our product. Strong performers in DevOps have an outsize impact on engineering, and therefore our business.
Once people come in and master their domain, we do not put an upper ceiling on the responsibilities or opportunities available, quite the opposite.
